WELCOME TO THE CHERTSEY CAFE

Hi! We're Bridget and Jamie.

Welcome to our slice of Kiwi heaven.

Built in 1877, we’ve renovated and reopened the Chertsey Tavern country pub as the Chertsey Cafe, offering warm, homemade and Kiwi comfort food for locals and travellers on Route 1.

Now, it’s home to our family and a haven for locally made food and drinks to travellers up and down the East Coast.

Stop by and say hi!

THE HISTORY

Good food (and drink) has been served here since 1877. The license was first granted to Mr A Stenning and gave travellers up and down the East Coast a place to stable their horses, stay overnight, and grab some food and drink. Five years after opening, in 1882, the hotel license was granted to Mr James Wallace, provided it had a bathroom fitted!

When Ashburton outlawed the sale of alcohol from 1903 to 1949, the Chertsey Hotel (being outside the area) kept serving. It was a popular local option!

Since we took ownership in 2024, we’ve renovated and updated the tavern and made it our very own.

There’s nothing like good, classic and modern Kiwi homemade food to refresh you on your travels. We’ve created a menu that suits all tastes and an atmosphere that makes your stop well worth it.
